Divergent - Book report

"Divergent" is set in a post-apocalyptic world. The war has ended, and the survivors all live in Chicago which is surrounded by a big fence. The fence is keeping the people inside safe, from the unknown world outside. The survivors created a system after the war, to prevent something like it from ever happening again. Five different groups for different kinds of people. They called them factions, and every single person is supposed to fit in and choose one of them to live in. But this system has a flaw, there are people that doesn't fit in, that fit  in more than one faction or that doesn't belong in this society at all. This is threatening the system, and the leaders have decided to hunt these people down and kill them.

The selfless belong in Abnegation, the peaceful belong in Amity, the honest belong in Candor, the brave belong in Dauntless, the intellectual belong in Erudite and the people that doesn't belong are Divergents. All five factions serve a purpose in the society. The Dauntless are like the police, they are supposed to protect the citizens and keep the unknown dangers outside the fence from getting in. Abnegation are the helping hand of this world. They love helping others, and many of the cities political leaders are from abnegation. Just like this, all factions serve a purpose and must function.

At sixteen years old, all citizens have to get tested. It helps them to see where they belong, and what faction to choose. Almost all people choose the faction they were born in, and get to stay with their families and friends, but some choose another faction and get to start over on a new slate.

The book begins just like the movie with the main character, Tris' mom cutting her hair. She explains some things about Abnegation, and that she doesn't feel like she belongs there. She feels like her family fits in so much better than her. Fast forward to the test. She fails the test and the girl testing her tells her all about divergents and that she can't tell anybody what her test results were. She is confused and goes home. And then there is a ceremony where all sixteen year olds choose their factions, and both Tris and her brother leave Abnegation. So Tris' new journey begins and she has to show her new faction, The dauntless, that she belongs. She can't let anybody suspect that she is a Divergent.
And what would a teen novel be without a love story? Tris meets a guy named Four, and his authority and fierce attitude makes her interested. And of course he is interested in her as well, and they slowly fall in love.

I really like this book, and the trend with strong female characters in books and movies is something I'm truly enjoying. I have to say, I had a blast reading this. The characters, the setting and the plot were perfectly blended and I couldn't stop reading. There was so much going on and the excitement didn't die until I had finished the book. Unsuspected plot twists and so much action, I was hooked from the first page and I can't wait to read the next two books. I loved seeing Tris evolving through the book, and I really want to see more of her. She and Four are really awesome characters, and such a cute couple. They make the book so true and personal, which I really liked. Overall I would give this book 5 / 5.
